What Do IPAF Training Courses Offer?

An IPAF training course is a comprehensive and last a varying amount of time, depending on the experience of the trainee taking them. Each course offers unique materials and can be supplemented with other optional courses that will help operators understand more about their MEWP work.

Each IPAF operator course is delivered with a specific goal in mind: any operator can take any course they need, but the courses allow individual learners to train in whatever niches and fields are relevant to their position.

Not only can these training courses provide a PAL card (vital for a lot of on-site work), but also practical training benefits: access to working-at-height training equipment, real powered access equipment to aid with powered access training, and some of the best instructors available.

This can help you build up your skills – individually or as part of a team – far faster than online courses. IPAF training centres are able to accommodate all IPAF trainees and can easily be found in Great Harwood, giving you easy access to physical training providers.

For further information about the material involved in certain courses, you can contact us to find out more about them and what they entail. Whether they are operation, management or safety training, all IPAF training courses have value, both on-site and in the planning or supervising roles.

On passing the IPAF theory and practical test we will apply for an IPAF MEWP Operator’s License – PAL Card on your behalf, when booking the IPAF training course please make sure that you have read and understand the entry requirements and booking conditions for this course.

Get Started

Whether you take a health and safety course or learn to operate a MEWP, these accredited courses are worth having on your CV, especially when represented by a PAL Card. They are a valuable asset to have and prove that you understand how to manipulate and inspect a MEWP at your current position.

If you are interested in any of these courses, whether that is a full training week or a one-off health and safety or management course, then please get in touch and arrange for some IPAF training. It does not take long to get yourself licenced and properly trained with the operation of these platforms.

This contact form is the best place to start: if you are ready to sign up or just want to know more about a course that you are considering, then we are more than happy to answer any questions you have. IPAF training is one of the easiest ways to prove that you are a qualified, trained and skilled MEWP operator.

MEWP-Specific Courses

Some of the training courses we offer are also designed for certain platforms. Mobile boom/cherry picker training and courses about scissor lifts platforms require different skills, so IPAF training centres are capable of specialised safety training for operators of a single specific platform type.

Of course, the UK training centres also provide general courses and benefits like working-at-height training, health and safety training, and the Powered Access Licence card. If you have specific needs, you can contact our IPAF team to see what is on offer and how your training needs can be satisfied.

Course Overview

Here are the core courses, ones that have been used throughout Great Harwood to train up operators that are experts in the safe and effective use of a MEWP. Any IPAF training course has the best possible health and safety precautions taken, especially those with hands-on training work.

IPAF 3A/3B MEWP Operator Training

The standard MEWP Operator Training course is aimed at brand new operators, covering all of the preparation and safety steps involved with a variety of different machines. This includes both Push Around Vertical (PAV) MEWPs and Insulated Aerial Device (IAD) MEWPs.

The courses are certified by the TÜV and can vary in length based on how many MEWP machines are involved in the training process. Many new operators use this as their first course when taking on MEWP work, and it serves as an introduction to more complex modules for specialist roles.

IPAF 3A/3B operator training is aimed at general operational and safety training, with both parts of the IPAF 3A/3B course being useful. For operators who only use 3A/3B platforms (scissor lifts/boom lifts), earning both accredited qualifications is still a very worthwhile result.

PAL+ Advanced MEWP Operator Training

If you are using Mobile Elevating Work Platforms in dangerous or risky situations, then the PAL+ IPAF course is designed to provide training services in Great Harwood for dealing with challenging environments and high-risk situations. This can be useful for employees in industrial fields or construction jobs.

MEWP Demonstrator Training

If you already have the knowledge and experience of basic MEWP safety, then employers might require you to deliver that safety information to a new operator. This course allows demonstrators to help other operators learn about MEWP limitations and safety procedures to follow during their operation.

MEWP Instructor Training

Unlike demonstrator training, this course allows an operator to become an IPAF instructor. If you are interested in being employed in IPAF Approved Training Centres or want to work as one of many independent instructors throughout the world, then this is the fastest way to learn those skills.

Additional Training Courses

Like all good training providers, IPAF training comes with numerous additional IPAF course options that add onto existing MEWP training. These can help platform operators get the best experience possible, no matter what kind of platform they operate.

Many of these courses take a day or less to complete and can be a vital part of powered access training when working with scissor lifts, boom lifts or other mobile vertical platforms.

Harness Use and Inspection

This is a short health-and-safety-focused course that teaches operators the basics of a MEWP harness and how it can be used as a safety measure.

Loading/Unloading MEWPs

MEWP operators can take this course to get in-depth knowledge on how they can load, unload, secure and transport important tools and equipment with a Mobile Elevated Work Platform, all while observing regular safety precautions.

MEWP For Managers

MEWPs for Managers is a form of MEWP training for any supervisor or manager that works with MEWP operators. Instead of telling you how to operate a platform, the course will cover a range of practical and theory details about how MEWPs should be managed and overseen in the workplace.

A similar course, MEWP Supervisor, is a North America-only course that fills the same niche.

Pre-Delivery Inspection

This course involves instructors telling trainees how to performing pre-delivery inspection of a MEWP and how issues or concerns can be recognised before they create further issues.

Competent Assessed Person (CAP) Certification

This safety course aims to help an operator or trainee understand how a MAWP can be examined for maximum safety and how to identify potential safety risks that might arise when somebody is trying to operate that MAWP in the workplace.

Do I Get a PAL Card?

The IPAF training course is delivered in a clear and direct way, focusing on each specific type of IPAF operator training, safety and management. Completing this training grants you a PAL Card (Powered Access Licence), which is recognised in over 50 individual countries and lasts for a total of five years.

Through IPAF courses, you can not only gain this PAL card on successful completion of the approved courses but also gain some of the best experience at dealing with a range of safety concerns, IPAF operator management scenarios, and technical limitations of a standard MEWP.

For those who already know the value of PAL cards, you can gain them from the majority of IPAF courses, including the MEWP training course. These PAL cards are issued digitally and can be accessed by the IPAF app, making it easier to display on-site if needed.

If you need more information about which specific courses can get you this PAL card, then contact us directly to learn more. The expiry date of your card will always be 5 years exactly.

What are the types of MEWPs?

There are two basic types of MEWPs – ‘booms’, such as cherry pickers which have both static and mobile forms and ‘verticals’ such as scissor lifts, that can also be static or mobile. There is my types of MEWPs to choose from so it is essential you choose the right one, the three main questions to ask yourself when choosing from the various types of MEWPs are:

Who is using the equipment?

Both types of MEWPs require safety training  to be operated on the jobsite. Before choosing your desired lift, you must consider the amount of workers that needs to be elevated, what kind of equipment and materials they need to bring on the work platform, and also where the machine will be operated.

What kind of work is being done?

From the previous question you can see that boom and scissor lifts are typically utilized for different types of work. Some important questions you need to ask yourself when creating this plan are, Will the work be indoor, outdoor or both? Will you need to drive the machine through small and confined areas such as doorways? What kind of flooring will the machine have to travel on?
