What Do IPAF Training Courses Offer?

An IPAF training course is a comprehensive programme that varies in duration depending on the experience of the trainee. Each course offers unique materials and can be supplemented with other optional modules that help operators understand their MEWP work in detail.

Each IPAF operator course is delivered with a specific goal in mind: any operator can take any course they need, but the courses allow learners to train in whatever niches are relevant to their role.

Not only can these training courses provide a PAL card (vital for many on-site jobs), but also practical experience: working-at-height training equipment, real powered access machines, and hands-on instruction from experienced trainers.

This can help you build up your skills — individually or as part of a team — far faster than online-only options. IPAF training centres are available in Brighton and Hove, giving you access to certified local providers.

What are the various types of MEWPs?

What are Mobile Elevated Work Platforms?

Mobile Elevated Work Platforms also known as MEWP are types of plant, equipment that facilitate working at large heights. They consist of a platform on an extending structure and chassis, with controls for operations.

What is IPAF certificate?

The IPAF certificate or PAL (Powered Access License) is recognised as worldwide proof of platform operator training to the highest standard. They are issued by the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) to platform operators who successfully complete their training.

What is a scissor lift?

A scissor lift is a classification of manlift often found in construction and facility maintenance applications designed elevate workers and their tools to working heights ranging from 5.9m (19 ft) to 17.9m (59 ft). Scissor lifts are work platforms used to safely move workers vertically and to different locations in a variety of industries including construction, retail, entertainment and manufacturing.

What are the types of MEWPs?

There are two basic types of MEWPs – ‘booms’, such as cherry pickers which have both static and mobile forms and ‘verticals’ such as scissor lifts, that can also be static or mobile. There is my types of MEWPs to choose from so it is essential you choose the right one, the three main questions to ask yourself when choosing from the various types of MEWPs are:

Who is using the equipment?

Both types of MEWPs require safety training  to be operated on the jobsite. Before choosing your desired lift, you must consider the amount of workers that needs to be elevated, what kind of equipment and materials they need to bring on the work platform, and also where the machine will be operated.

What kind of work is being done?

From the previous question you can see that boom and scissor lifts are typically utilized for different types of work. It is your job to require the factors that impact work on your jobsite, as well as any potential dangers or safety risks. Being able to understand the demands of your project will give you the insight into what kind of lift and even what model will be most effective.

Where will the machine be operating?

It is hugely important that you create a plan for exactly what you need the machine to do and how it will be transported to each working location, bigger lifts are not always best. Some important questions you need to ask yourself when creating this plan are, Will the work be indoor, outdoor or both? Will you need to drive the machine through small and confined areas such as doorways? What kind of flooring will the machine have to travel on?

What are 3a and 3b in MEWP?

The IPAF 3a and 3b Training course instructs an operator to prepare and operate various types of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) including cherry pickers, scissor lifts, and mobile booms such as articulated & electric boom lifts.

What are static booms?

Static booms are an overall category name which includes spider booms on tracks or wheels, van-mounted booms, truck-mounted booms or trailer-mounted booms. A 1b Static Boom (cherry pickers) are MEWPs capable of both vertical and horizontal platform movement, enabling them to reach further and in different directions. They can appear as road-legal, drivable vehicles like vans and trucks, as towable trailers or on a dedicated track-mounted chassis.

What is a Self Propelled Scissor Lift?

Self Propelled scissor lifts are the most common type of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPS) move vertically through folding supports in a X pattern, known as scissor mechanism. They are classified in 2 main categories based on how these are powered and where they are used. Self propelled electric scissor lifts are mostly used on flat indoor or outdoor surfaces, the body is pleasing to the eye and flexing to operate.
